Teaching Your Kids About Money in 2012

Kids & teens learn to handle money
I want to announce a new series of articles, Teaching your Kids about Money, which is a comprehensive guide for teaching your child or teen about money management and financial literacy.  I have outlined 12 basic financial concepts that are important for kids to learn and practice while they are growing up. At the beginning of each month, I will give you more information and tips about introducing these topics in your family and will share some practical ideas for implementing these concepts into your everyday life.

January:  Earning and using money
February:  Investing & growing your money
March:  Saving for short term goals
April:  Giving back and sharing your money with charities
May:  Avoiding impulse purchases
June:  Spending plans for vacations
July:  Tracking your money
August:  Budgeting for common expenses
September:  Credit -  What is credit?  Pros & cons?  How does it relate to kids?
October:  Saving for long term goals
November:  Prioritizing your needs and wants
December:  Thinking about the future:  make an earning plan, thoughts about college, etc.

The January article will be out early next week.  I'll be talking about how kids and teens can get their own money, from allowance to jobs.  Subscribe by email or with my RSS feed so that you don't miss it!

Have I left out any important topics?  Let me know and I’ll try to work them in.

  1. Nice approach. I have developed a similar annual planner for my adult and young adult financial education programs that I run in South Africa. I would be keen to share any ideas with you in this regard. You are welcome to view my company website on www.motivatetoday.co.za for further details about what we do and what we offer.

  3. I will follow this with interest. However, our ten year old learned loads by playing Cashflow with us. We got the proper version (not the kiddie one) and I was surprised how quickly he learned about cash flow, investing, stocks and passive income.

  4. Maria@moneyprinciple - I simply have to get that game and try it out with my kids. Maybe I can work it into some of the monthly plans!

  8. I love the organized idea... I've seen lots of miscellaneous ones, but this approach seems manageable. Thanks for the curriculum.
